Senior Electrical Engineer

Technical & Engineering

Permanent Position, 8:6 (days) Roster

FIFO ex Perth to Murrin Murrin Operations Pty Ltd

Minara Resources is wholly owned by Glencore International and operates the Murrin Murrin Nickel Cobalt mining and refining project in the northern Goldfields region of Western Australia between the towns of Leonora and Laverton.

Our Murrin Murrin Operations includes engineering complexity not present in the processing of other commodities such as iron ore, gold, coal or mineral sands which allows us to offer exceptional career growth and technical challenges.

As an owner-operator, we run our own Utilities department which incorporates a power station (including steam and gas turbines), a 4400TPD acid plant (the largest in the southern hemisphere), 6TPH H2S plant and a reverse osmosis water treatment plant which draws from our extensive bore fields. Our Ore Leach area utilises High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology and our Refinery produces LME grade Nickel and Cobalt briquettes on site.

The Role:

An exciting opportunity has become available for a suitably qualified Electrical Engineer to join Minara in the role of Senior Electrical Engineer. As part of a combined team of 11 Electrical Engineers and Control Systems Engineers, you will report directly to the Superintendent – Electrical Engineering & Control Systems. This site-based role will see you coordinate electrical engineering activities relating to safe operations, asset reliability and maintenance of our highly complex hydrometallurgical plant.

Our power generation is in excess of 80 megawatts reticulated throughout the plant and village via 25 substations. We combine steam and gas turbines as well as diesel generation systems. As a leader within the Electrical Engineering team, you will provide an advisory service on asset acquisition, enhancement and replacement projects for electrical controls and power systems. Your scope of work will include completing engineering investigations, equipment failure analysis, develop equipment reliability improvement strategies, design reviews and occasionally undertaking the role of project manager for projects within your area of expertise.

Our Distributed Control System (DCS) consists of approximately 50 000 control loops managed within 4 Control Rooms, and is a mixture of Yokogawa Centum CS (1990’s vintage) and Yokogawa Centum VP (2008). Along with DCS control network, Murrin also operates a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)) network for more basic control functions, operating with  6 generations of Allen Bradley PLCs. Murrin operates a telemetry system believed to have the largest coverage in Australia, to cover communications to bore fields and mining pits.

Being a small team working in a large plant, you will gain hands on experience across the full spectrum of engineering, complex plant control, maintenance, projects and design, all in a highly complex plant environment. To this end, you will work closely with the Control Systems, Electrical Maintenance and Reliability teams on site.

The complexity of our plant means we seek someone who has strong background knowledge to understand problems and the drive and determination to implement solutions.

In addition to people management and strong communication skills, you'll need to be either able to demonstrate practical hands-on maintenance engineering experience, or have a solid electrical engineering background with desire to move into a more hands-on maintenance-focussed role.

We require the following qualifications/experience:

  • Safety focussed
  • Electrical Engineering Degree, or equivalent
  • Exposure to HV power generation and distribution systems
  • Control and instrumentation systems experience
  • Previous exposure to a metallurgical plant or process environment
  • At least 4 years experience in a supervisory role
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

A basic understanding of electrical equipment in hazardous areas would be desirable, but is not essential.

The Lifestyle:

This position is available on a family friendly 8 days on / 6 days off roster, FIFO from Perth. We fly to site on jets making it a short and comfortable flight and our village is well equipped to keep you entertained with a gym, tennis courts, basketball courts, cricket nets, swimming pool, tavern and TV including dedicated movie channels.  All our rooms are ensuited and our resident chefs will ensure you are well fed.

Our competitive salary packages include benefits such as 12.5% superannuation, medical allowance, site allowance and quarterly production bonuses.
